Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a safe motherhood intervention scheme under the National Health Mission. It promotes institutional delivery among pregnant women from poor families by providing direct cash assistance. JSY aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in India. Women who deliver in a government hospital or accredited private hospital receive a cash incentive. ASHA workers play a key role in connecting pregnant women to this scheme.
All pregnant women who deliver in a government health centre or accredited private hospital are eligible. For BPL and SC/ST families, there is no restriction on the number of live births. For other categories, benefit is available for the first two live births only. The woman must be registered at the health centre during pregnancy. Women below 19 years of age are also eligible. ASHA workers help with registration and guidance.
