The Soil Health Card Scheme was launched to help farmers improve soil quality and crop productivity. Under this scheme, soil samples are collected from farmers' fields every two years and tested in government labs. Farmers receive a Soil Health Card that lists the nutrient status of their soil and recommends the right fertilizers and quantities. This helps reduce overuse of chemical fertilizers and saves money for farmers while improving yield.
All farmers who own or cultivate agricultural land in India are eligible for the Soil Health Card Scheme. Both small and large farmers can avail the benefits. The scheme is implemented through state agriculture departments and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs). Tenant farmers and sharecroppers are also eligible. The card is issued at no cost to the farmer.
