📋 Overview
Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) is one of India's most important sanitation campaigns. Launched in 2014, its goal is to make India open-defecation free. Under this scheme, rural households that do not have a toilet get a grant of ₹12,000 to build a toilet. SBM-Urban focuses on construction of community and individual household toilets in urban areas. As of 2026, SBM Phase 2 focuses on making villages ODF-Plus with solid and liquid waste management.

👤 Eligibility Criteria
Households in rural areas that do not have a toilet and are not previous beneficiaries of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) toilet scheme are eligible. BPL families and APL families with certain income restrictions are covered. The applicant must be a permanent resident of the village. Applications are processed through the Gram Panchayat. Urban households can apply through their local urban body. SC/ST and other marginalised communities get priority.

- Contact your local Gram Panchayat or Ward Office
- Ask for the SBM toilet registration form
- Fill in your name, Aadhaar number and bank details
- Swachh Bharat Mission application can also be submitted online at sbmg.nic.in
- After approval, you will receive the first instalment to start construction
- Toilet must be completed and verified before final payment is released
- Village-level officers or ASHA workers will guide you through the process
