📋 Overview

Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) is one of India's most important sanitation campaigns. Launched in 2014, its goal is to make India open-defecation free. Under this scheme, rural households that do not have a toilet get a grant of ₹12,000 to build a toilet. SBM-Urban focuses on construction of community and individual household toilets in urban areas. As of 2026, SBM Phase 2 focuses on making villages ODF-Plus with solid and liquid waste management.

👤 Eligibility Criteria

Households in rural areas that do not have a toilet and are not previous beneficiaries of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) toilet scheme are eligible. BPL families and APL families with certain income restrictions are covered. The applicant must be a permanent resident of the village. Applications are processed through the Gram Panchayat. Urban households can apply through their local urban body. SC/ST and other marginalised communities get priority.

  1. Contact your local Gram Panchayat or Ward Office
  2. Ask for the SBM toilet registration form
  3. Fill in your name, Aadhaar number and bank details
  4. Swachh Bharat Mission application can also be submitted online at sbmg.nic.in
  5. After approval, you will receive the first instalment to start construction
  6. Toilet must be completed and verified before final payment is released
  7. Village-level officers or ASHA workers will guide you through the process
